Hardware wireless 802.11g and 802.11b networks from Soyo Computer Inc.

Introduction

The Taiwanese company Soyo Computer traces its history to 1985. The main products of the company – motherboards, virtually unknown in Russia, but also enjoying strong demand in some European countries and the Americas. In addition the company produces matplat computer cases and barebone-platform, card readers and flash drives, wireless adapters and access points.

The current line of wireless networking equipment Soyo five units, three of which were in our lab. Each of them is interesting in its own way. The head of the line standard Wireless Access Point 802.11g – Soyo AWRO3101. This also supports the standard PC-card – an adapter for laptops AWPC3101. These two devices are marketed under the brand created specifically Aerielink, which in itself speaks of the importance attached to these devices manufacturers. As a minimum speed, but no less interesting “makeweight” stands AWUA1211 – Wireless USB-adapter 802.11b stardarta in fashionable now symbiosis with a 128-megabyte flash drive.

Standard WLAN 802.11g, allowing you to transfer data at speeds up to 54 Mbit / s in the 2.4 GHz band was finally approved in June 2003. This standard is backward compatible with the still dominant in the market of 11-megabit standard 802.11b. And it looks like 802.11b leadership inevitably coming to an end. But lets take first things first.

Soyo AWRO3101 – 802.11g Wireless Access Point with 4-port hub and Internet router

Wireless Access Point AWRO3101 performed in the same form factor with 4-port hub in a wired network and WAN-port for Internet access. This is a more viable option for the computer network and rent a small office, rather than an access point with a single port, a wired network. In my apartment – for sure. Actually, I use a similar device at home, though, alas, less speed. In the WAN-port cable is inserted, which in my apartment tightened DCS provider (home network). To one of the four Ethernet-port hooked my computer to another – the print server on which hang two printers – inkjet and laser. His wife and child – two wireless user. There is still a laptop, which, depending on the current needs of advocates is wired, the wireless network client.

But enough bragging, open the box with the router. Inside – actually a router with power supply cable, RJ45, drive a manual with English, so subtle statement about connecting and initial setup. Still, there are two tiny screws with wall plugs for wall mounting. For some reason, it is believed that a man who wished to hang on the wall of the router, be sure to find a suit for that screws directly into the box with the router. Therefore, manufacturers of wireless access points are concerned about the mass purchase of dowels, screws, and bags for packaging. Specially trained people packed wall plugs and screws in bags, which then also brewed in a special machine.

And all this for the sake of obsessed with that, just seeing the wireless access point, there is enough rushing drill and destroy the wall. Well, at least do not put the drill in the boxes with routers. Soon, perhaps, will be :) .

Putting aside the sarcasm, remove the router from the box. Neat small size “soap box” protruding from the rear detachable antenna. At the top of the front – the indicators.

Purpose of indicators it is clear from the photographs, the indicators of network power and wireless activity are lit in green, the other – yellow.

The rear of the device is not original. Plug the power adapter, four 10/100-megabitnyh LAN port, WAN-port, “reset” hole and an antenna.

Bottom – four rubber feet, identification sticker and a jack for attaching the router to the wall under the very same screws and plugs. As usual, all the fun at the access point – inside.

As demonstrated by the autopsy, a portion of the wireless device meets the network adapter MiniPCI-XG-601, based on the chip ISL 3880IK (pictured closed with adhesive tape), the developer is – the company Intersil – after a series of mergers appeared today in the Conexant.

Finished with internal and external inspection, connect the router to the wired network, turn on the power and begin to have the usual attempts to get to the units settings through the browser. I must say the authors of firmware for this kind of devaysov receive our brainchild IP-address of the default, try to shine with originality. The first two bytes of the desired address, as a rule 192.168, but the contents of the remaining two bytes would never guess without careful study manual. Fantasy of the developers of Soyo stretched right up to 192.168.1.254. At the entrance, as usual, asked your name. Customarily replying: “admin”, go inside.

Design, I must say, nemudryaschy, but right on the spot. Most of the Setup button in the upper left corner is setup Internet connection, made as usual “teapots” zanudlivogo Wizarda. Wizardu explaining where we have the Internet, go to the tab, Lan.

Everything here is very simple. Much more interesting wireless settings tab.

Regulatory Domain not be changed and displays the part of the world, outside of which the user of the device can amass on its head with the law. So, at least, according to a users manual.

Station Name – the name of the router given to him by his master, and the SSID – the name by which the router – or rather, the access point will be to identify the wireless network clients.

Number of radio channels by default set to 11, change it, it makes sense only if there are any problems in the transmission of data over the network.

By clicking on the “Configure WEP”, we get to the settings page encryption of data transmission over the wireless network. You can select 64 or 128-bit encryption, and one of three methods of authentication. Here we introduce and encryption keys, and especially for the lazy generation is a key based on a code word. It is better to not be lazy and invent key itself – will be more reliable.

The other two buttons on the wireless network configuration page are the favorite business network admins – the oppression of users – you can choose from a list of general and zagnobit those who have nothing to do on the internet or local network.

Password tab on the home page configuration utility to change the administrator password (by default it is not at all). Status Tab displays the status of, respectively, the router configuration at that time, when the administrator occurred to wander on this same tab.

And finally, right on the front page warning red button marked “Advanced”. Red – to a silly “tea” and is not afraid to not be useful. But we are certainly not “kettles” and fearlessly go into the forbidden zone.

The menu item “Advanced Internet” makes it possible to fine-tune and routing incoming network traffic.

You can configure a redirect incoming TCP and UDP – packets from specific applications to one or another computer on the LAN. If you are not playing in the Age Of Empires, and into something more advanced, then your service button Special Application, allowing to set up a redirect traffic for specific port numbers.

To volunteer suicide bombers have the opportunity to create a single machine inside the LAN so-called DMZ – the demilitarized zone, which will be wrapped up by the router, all incoming Internet traffic that is not within the scope of other previously defined rules. If you have a little trouble with the network worms, and other such vermin – open the DMZ, and they will come to you :) .

URL Filter is designed to help the guardians of family morality and corporate ethics. It is believed that it can be used to restrict access to overly curious users to sites which are to them by virtue of young age and service utilization to walk is not recommended. A filter that works, except that sites shaloputnye multiply day by day in a geometric progression: a cover it – will find the other five.

Even more subtle mockery of users provides Access Control. Users can be spread on the group, within which to deny access to certain Internet services at a particular time of day. Type, the child, after ten oclock at night he likes, he likes not, and the chat :) Get out.

More not so interesting. Item “Remote Management” opens, or, conversely, closes the remote control settings, the router via the Internet.

“Virtual Servers” determines which of the computers on the LAN may act as WEB, FTP, Mail, DNS, and Telnet – servers that are accessible from the Internet. If you do not have your own domain name, you can register at dyndns.org, and when you turn on the router will be there every time signaling the availability of services where the registered domain name.

Upgrade Firmware – everything is clear, as soon as new versions can be poured directly from the browser.

PC Database – a list of subordinate router computers. DHCP-clients fall into this database automatically, the remaining, if any, will have to register with his hands.

Options – here you can specify a secondary DNS and set up already quite exotic options like Firmware upgrade via TFTP.

Item Security defines the security settings of the DoS-attacks, the response to a ping from the Internet and opens / closes the VPN-pass traffic.

As for the logs, then, as they say, no one is forgotten and nothing is forgotten. If necessary, piece of hardware will remember everything and she will send to the soap when it occurs in this requirement.

Would be enough just to read it all the time …

Then you can go and change the MAC-address hardverny WAN-port router. It is useful, especially in the BCS, where network access is usually limited to just the MAC-addresses.

And finally, routing. You can enable / disable the protocol RIP1, can be assigned a static routing on the host or subnet, if your local network there is a need.

The abundance of options is impressive and is consistent with the objectives and scope of this unit.

After configuring the router, undertake the installation of its equivalent in speed wireless network client.
